Biochemistry, mathematics, and Spanish/ 2019
I live in a state of wanderlust. Diversity excites me. Postcards of foreign lands cover my walls, and world music fills my playlists. Drawn to the next adventure, I have trekked through the mountains of New Mexico and backpacked the cities of Italy. I practice community through global understanding and appreciating, constantly finding the beauty in the different. I believe in the motto of a lesson best taught through experience. This approach to life has pushed me to Detroit in efforts to understand the social and economic effects on poverty. This experience was so impactful that I am leading a mission trip this spring to investigate local poverty issues. Constantly attempting to understand the cultural influences on the individual, I find myself experiencing diversity abroad in foreign countries and at home with international friends. For me, appreciation is tied close to understanding the different. Thus, I started a Spanish club for elementary students to teach them about the influence of culture and the ways of tolerance. But, most importantly, my need to understand the world fuels me to pursue a career in medicine. I seek to understand the roots of beliefs and opinions. Why do we think the way we think? Naturally, then, my interest of choice is mental health. I approach healing through understanding the individual from his biochemistry to his social and economic background. Ultimately, I intend to combine my holistic approach to medicine and my love of diversity by volunteering with Doctors Without Borders. After graduating from Drury University, I will attend St. Louis University's School of Medicine. I ultimately plan to specialize in women's health issues and advocate for reproductive rights and autonomy. |
